Materials For Defence And Protection
Aramid Laminates - L0 Series / L4 Series
L0 Series

Description Semi-rigid thermoformable multi-layered panels of aramid fabric produced in different weights and thickness' to give protection against a wide range of threat levels, when either used on their own or in conjunction with other materials.
Physical
Properties
These materials have been designed as semi-rigid ballistic laminates, hence physical properties are not applicable. The laminates can be curved by the application of dry heat at a temperature of 150°C.
Applications
Insert plates: L0 laminates used in conjunction with ceramic tiles will upgrade soft body armour to defeat high velocity rifle threats. The thermoformable properties enable the laminate to be curved fit the body contours.
Vehicle Protection: As primary armour against hand gun and sub-machine gun rounds. In conjunction with ceramic tiles they will perform as a primary armour against high velocity rifle threats.
Clipboards for security personnel.
Luggage linings.

Availabilty
designation Thickness (mm) Weight (kg/m²)
L0004 3.5 3
L0005 6.0 5
L0002 8.0 6.75
L0009 11.0 9
L0001 12.0 10
Can be cut to various sizes and shapes. Maximum size 1.9m × 1.2m.

Anti-Ballistic (i) Primary Armour - low velocity threats.
L0005 meets G0 level of BS 5051
L0002 meets G1 level of BS 5051 also defeats
9mm Geco @ 400 m/s.
L0009 meets G2 level of BS 5051
L0001 defeats all soft nosed hand gun rounds including 9mm
Norma 19022 @ 420 m/s.
(ii) Composite Armour - high velocity threats (Body armour uses).
L0004 faced with 6.3mm ceramic tile defeats 5.56mm ball and A.P.
L0002 faced with 8.6mm ceramic tile defeats 7.62 × 51mm A.P.
and also 7.62 × 39mm A.P.I.
The above examples employ aluminium oxide ceramic tiles with a specific gravity of 3.78 and are designed as insert plates to be used in front of soft body armour (typically 18 plies of D0235). The inserts are over wrapped with a suitable spall cover.
(iii) Fragmentation Resistance - (17 grain fragment simulator)

Designation V50
L0004 400 m/s
L0005 480 m/s
L0002 570 m/s
L0001 680 m/s

L4 Series

Description The L4 series of aramid laminates is similar in appearance and performance to the L0 series. It has been developed to allow greater laminate design flexibility and the inclusion of alternative aramid fabrics. The L4 series laminates have the added advantage of reduced panel thickness for a given anti-ballistic performance when compared to an L0 series equivalent.
Physical Properties Similar to the L0 series. Please note the thermo-forming temperature of L4 laminates is 110°C.
Applications As L0 series.
Availability Equivalents to all existing L0 series laminates are available. Additionally, laminates can be manufactured from customer-specified fabric types.
Further Details Further information relating to all our thermo-formable laminates is available on request.
