The complex
nature of this topic precludes a detailed discussion. Different applications
demand different fabrics, often a combination of two fabrics may offer the
optimum cost/performance compromise.

Fabric
Finishes
Scoured - this
finishing process removes fibre and fabric additives thus increasing
anti-ballistic efficiency. Scoured fabric is generally the most efficient but
care is needed to prevent the ingress of moisture. |
Water repellent -
ingress of moisture into an aramid fabric is to be avoided at all costs as this
decreases the performance of the fabric. The exclusion of moisture may be
achieved either by use of a water resistant envelope or a water repellent
fabric finish. The water repellent finish does not give complete protection for
extended immersion times. Any armour that has been subjected to immersion in
water should be thoroughly dried before use. |

| Trauma
Attenuation |
Armour
manufacturers and users should note that aramid fabrics are not the most
efficient trauma attenuators. The effects of blunt trauma on the body may cause
death or serious injury, even if the projectile is defeated. For this reason,
we recommend that armour systems include an appropriate trauma attenuation
pack. |
| Ultra-Violet
Radiation |
All aramids are
adversely affected by prolonged exposure to light. It is recommended that
aramid armour is contained within an opaque cover. Aramid fabric in roll from
should be stored such that it is protected from prolonged exposure to
daylight. |
