A successful visit to the TTSD (a new Defence Manufacturer's Association
sponsored conference) was made by Fothergill Engineered Fabrics in 2004. The
new technical textile forum was held for the first time in the prestigious
venue of the Royal Armouries, Leeds, in the UK. In addition to the interesting
and varied papers given during the two day conference an exhibition was held in
tandem for the attendees. Fothergill displayed many and varied applications
which are used by its customers in these areas of reinforcements and defence.
It was interesting to see that also on display by NP Aerospace was the CAV 100
light armoured vehicle currently in use in Iraq. This vehicle is totally
constructed in its armoured solution from woven S2 glass roving produced
entirely by Fothergill in its Rock Nook Weaving facility. This vehicle is the
only light weight armoured composite vehicle in use by the British Army and has
proved successful in many of the UK's theatres of operation.
The picture shows the display stand of Fothergill, which included body armours
of current issue as well as featuring a novel approach and resolution of the
problems encountered in Radome manufacture, which has recently been launched
and patented. Interesting to note that these advanced materials used in
ballistics and reinforcements continue to dominate the military Thinking due in
the main to the advantages which are resultant from their performance,
ballistic resistance and weight saving capabilities.
